I'm Robert G. Raleigh — an agile IT project manager & frontend developer working in Portland, OR with 10+ years of combined project management, team leadership roles, and combined technology consulting experience since 2004.
I'll parter directly with your digital agency, or forward-thinking small-to-mid-size business to help your team plan, iterate, develop, launch, and maintain your small-to-mid-size, or large-scale technology projects.
Throughout my career, development teams have launched more than 100+ enterprise apps, mobile apps, custom CMS websites, e-commerce stores, and static sites under my leadership. We acheived this sucess while managing a client roster of 5 – 7 projects, with budgets ranging from $5,000 – $250,000.
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in English, from Portland State University, with a concentration in professional writing. I've also completed additional Management/Supervisory Development training at Portland Community College in project management and leadership.
Outside of work, I’m passionate about songwriting, slide blues guitar, and intergenerational learning. Most Sundays, I can be found in the yellow or blue room at Powell’s Books, looking for the next great mystery or short story writer.
What are you going to do with an English degree? Write the Great American Novel? Become a university professor?
Have you ever been asked a question by a stranger that changed your life? Well, I have! I was asked this question repeatedly during my freshman and sophmore years of college. I've gotta be honest with you. I didn't have a great answer.
But hearing this question over and over got me thinking. What was I going to do with my life? Looking inward, my answer was technology. I've always been passionate about technology. Boy — let me tell ya, teaching yourself how to code was a much different beast in 2004.
In 2009, I joined the staff at Linn-Benton Chamber Coalition. Technology Association of Oregon and during this time, I was part of the team that launched the Willamette Angel Conference,
In 2012, I co-founded Log Camp, a social venture developing coding and computer science curriculum for use in after-school programs in middle and high schools. Under my leadership, the Log Camp program scaled to seven teaching sites, serving almost 500 youth, and proving more than 4000 cumulutive hours of onsite instruction.
In 2014, our team were global finalists for the prestigious ImagineK12 EdTech vertical at Y Combinator, and the PIE PDX accelerator in 2014. In 2015, the team and I were considered for startup investment by the newly established Intel Capital: Diversity Fund, investing $125 million dollars in technology startups run by women and underrepresented minorities.
In 2016, I joined the team at Hello World Dev’s, a software agency with a firm commitment to mentoring emerging talent. While in charge of project management at Hello World, I've managed a rotating roster of 5 - 7 software and technology projects, with project budgets ranging in size from $5,000 to $100,000 to $250,000. Our team has launched 80+ projects in the past 16 months.
I believe that agility is central to the success and longevity of any modern technology professional. Being agile, and cultivating an ability to face the uncertain, quickly make decisions, and rapidly de-escalate situations, is essential in today's internet-based world.
I believe in helping others through direct action in my own community. I do this in many ways, but I'm happiest when the answer to "What can I contribute today?" is action-driven, and I'm creating lasting value, rather than just "giving".
I believe that creativity is innate in all people, but our ability to leverage creative thinking is often prevented by fear. It's not always the level of creativity, or novelty of a new idea or solution that matters most. It's having the courage to implement it.
I believe that empathy is a buzz word for many of us. Starting out with empathy—for customers—for coworkers—for strangers can be difficult. Yet it's essential, and can be so powerful when it's genuine. A human connection can change everything.
I believe that effective problem-solving comes from an iterative approach. My intellectual curiosity and drive to identify and solve problems has led me to lean into many unique business obstacles and challenges throughout my career.
I believe we owe it to ourselves and those around us to "pay our successes forward". I actively seek out diverse leaders, from different geneartions, sharing accrued wisdom and experience freely with others, as part of my daily professional approach.
